Last night’s [FAT] theme was Urban Experiment, so I was inspired to create a wardrobe experiment. I found a cool set of curtains at Value Village and thought it would make a nifty kimono.
My recycled duds matched the message given by fashion-girl-bike-gang, The Deadly Nightshades, who produced a movie about recycling, re-using, reducing, and partying. [...]

Who Is Lillian Malcove?

The University of Toronto Art Centre is such a wonderful city secret; I do enjoy viewing its collections in a usually private environment. Their recent Group of Seven exhibition was a poetic display of Canadian landscape, but I adore the Lillian Malcove Collection.
The Malcove collection houses fascinating examples of Byzantine icons, my secret passion. [...]

[FAT] - Transitory Space

I had an idea when checking the racks at Shopgirls last week, inspired by another designer’s plaid jumper. So yesterday in the studio I altered a plaid skirt I had into something I could wear as a dress at [FAT]. Wore it over an American Apparel shirt and tights and completed the look with [...]

Mass Exodus Industry Show

Every fashion design student thinks she will change the world with her unique outlook. I simply adore the optimism and hope fused with graduation angst of student collections. I want to give the adorable little designers hugs and pat their cute little hairdos.
Mass Exodus, the Ryerson University graduate fashion show is always delightful and takes [...]

Portrait

How I love sitting for portraits. The Luminato Festival asked me to participate in Milles Femmes, a fascinating “human landscapes” project by French artist Pierre Maraval. He will photograph 1,000 women who all share a passion for Toronto arts and culture. Each woman also selects a word she feels defines her best.
Pierre told me [...]

My ideas are flat. Re-workings of the movie’s costumes are boring. What will punch up the Valley of the Dolls? Must make another trip to the video store for more inspiration.

Definitely needed the girls night weekend out! Sure I didn’t get any work done, but I feel so much better.
Kicked off Saturday night at Andy Poolhall, where Allison - the best bartendress in the world – looked after us girls. Then on to Tattoo Rock Parlour and skipped the line, thanks to our good DJ [...]

Punished by Comedy
April 7th, 2008 · No Comments
What a lunch. After berating me for Basher-infected prose when I should have focused on fashion, my editor enforced a punishment-assignment: a comedian profile.
Oh, how I loathe comedians. They try so desperately to make people laugh, it makes me depressed. Notoriously hideous interview subjects, they alternate from attention-craving fools to melancholy misanthropes, trying to make [...]

Do women really need to be taught how to walk in high heels?
Last week, I attended an event where hairstylist extraordinaire and Pantene Pro-V Global Haircare Ambassador Sam McKnight taught Toronto’s fashion elite about the season’s hair trends. For those of you who need to know, (and let’s face it, you all need to know), [...]

Dolls! Dolls! Dolls!
April 5th, 2008 · 1 Comment
The weather was clear today so I went for a walk. After browsing in Queen Video I rented Valley of the Dolls and ended up watching it 3 times in a row. I think this is it: inspiration for my next collection!
I’m back. It’s time to go out dancing with the girls!
