Canuck Style?

It’s Canada’s birthday again, which brings the perfect opportunity to highlight the country’s most stylish cities.

During my travels, I am always asked, “What is Canadian style?” and I always look to urbanites for the answer. We have Euro-American chic in Montreal, while Calgary is pure Western Wear. Fur is hot in Iqualuit, while Crocs are the thing for Victoria gardeners. Wellies are trendy and necessary in Halifax, but power suits are still the rage in Ottawa. Jeans and plaid reign in Regina while the latest ski styles are worn in Canmore. It is safe to say that Canadian Style is dictated by the great outdoors.

So get outdoors this long weekend to celebrate Canadian Style with pride.

Lucinda’s List: Top Ten Stylish Canadian Cities

  1. Montreal – Not only Canada’s most stylish city, but North America’s best dressed population; Montrealers dress up for the dépanneur, showing how you should heighten your style when tripping down to the corner store.
  2. Toronto – It is the centre of the Canadian fashion industry, hosts the country’s biggest and best fashion shows, and I live here. It couldn’t get any more stylish unless it was Montreal.
  3. Vancouver – The city once known for hippie shab is now hippie chic and more. From eco-style to couture consciousness, Vancouver is the future of Canadian fashion.
  4. Winnipeg – With its historic downtown core and winters too windy to do anything but create art, Winnipeg has a strong and stylish scene.
  5. Calgary – Urban cowboys can get it right or very wrong, but with all the oil money filling Cowtown pockets, Calgarians are snapping up stylish labels with fashion ferocity.
  6. Charlottetown – A city with stylish author Louisa McCormack and the longest-running musical homage to everyone’s favourite fiery redhead, Anne of Green Gables, Charlottetown is a true example of Canadian Chic.
  7. Victoria – Granny-chic reigns in Canada’s greenest city.
  8. Iqaluit – No city in the world can work winter style as well as the residents of Iqaluit can. Their street signs are high-design, in wonderfully graphic Inuktitut.
  9. Ottawa – Overpopulated by drab politicians, Ottawa has never ranked high on the style scale, but with season two of Project Runway Canada filming in our nation’s capital, perhaps our politicians will pick up a bit of flair.
  10. Moosejaw – I hear Moosejaw is the hip, new trend-town and is on track to dominating the scene in 2012.
