If you are like me, Dear Reader, you absolutely adore fashion photography. One single shot can take your breath away. An editorial collection of perfect poses can perk up your day. A fashion image can transport you to a magical place.

It’s been a while since an editorial spread has had as much impact as the entire August issue of Vogue Italia. The images were gorgeous, provoked discourse, and brought glamour back. I do hope other publications follow suit and put as much effort into future issues.

To improve the future, sometimes we have to look to the past, so I have been thinking about the most iconic fashion photos and editorial shoots of all time.

Lucinda’s List: The Best Fashion Photography of All Time

  1. There’s Only One Naomi by Steven Meisel - The August issue of Vogue Italia had fashionable lips flapping this season and will be the sartorial story of 2008, if not the decade.
  2. Edward Steichen for Art et Decoration - These were arguably the first fashion photos, appropriately using Poiret designs as subject.
  3. Twelve of the Most Photographed Models of the Period by Irving Penn - For Vogue, 1947. Elegant.
  4. Mainbocher Corset by Horst P. Horst - Beautiful black and white, captivating corset, stunning shape, and striking shadow.
  5. Carrie Bradshaw’s Vogue shoot by Patrick Demarchelier - Yes, it was famous Vogue photographer Monsieur Demarchelier taking photos of Carrie in her Vivienne Westwood wedding gown in the Sex and the City film.
  6. Kiki de Montparnasse by Man Ray - Photographer and muse worked together for many years to create an impressive collection of images.
  7. Dovima in an Evening Dress by Dior with Elephants of the Cirque d’Hiver by Richard Avedon - Avedon was a star of 1950’s fashion photography and this is a perfect example of his wonderful work.
  8. Louise Dahl-Wolfe for Harper’s - Ms. Dahl-Wolfe brought a sportiness to fashion shoots previously unseen. She also brought colour to fashion photography in 1937.
  9. Le Smoking by Helmut Newton- The classic Saint Laurent androgynous tuxedo photographed in the classic Newton androgynous style.
  10. Video work by Herb Ritts - Madonna and Janet Jackson never looked better than when captured by the motion picture of Herb Ritts.
  11. Calvin Klein campaigns by Bruce Weber - Not necessarily the most sophisticated of photographers, but you cannot deny his suggestive images have great cultural influence.
