I Got to See 3 Cool Shows

Oh, man…since invitations went out yesterday, I only had 5 responses! That can’t be good. Maybe I should send invitations earlier next season.

Oh yeah…I’ve got to figure out music and choreography too. No problem…that’s easy. In fact, everything is so much easier this second time around, I actually had time to go see a few shows.

Of course I made it to Sandee’s first LFW show and boy, is she a good designer! Everything was perfect for her Xena Warrior Princess Battles Wonder Woman collection. I can’t believe how professional it all was. She even made gift bags with Xena and Wonder Woman action figures! Not only that, but she had a bunch of sponsors, so she filled the bag with CDs, books, perfume, and chocolate. I don’t have money for a gift bag! And she even had a program with show order and all this information about her company. Now I’m wondering if the little brochure I made on my computer will be good enough. Guess it will have to be; my budget is gone. But anyway, Sandee’s clothes were pretty great and so well made. She is such a perfectionist and it showed. Sometimes I wish I could be as organized as her, but I don’t think she’ll ever be as whimsical and creative as me.

Two of the coolest shows were after Sandee’s, so I stayed to watch. I mean, since my clothes are done, I’m pretty much ready to go. The clothes are the key.

Two Toronto designers I admire so much, Damzels in this Dress and Playdead Cult joined forces for the most rock ‘n roll show ever! Damzels showed “Pretty” and Playdead was a little bit “Gritty”.  There was a collection of “Pretty” dresses perfect for summer picnics and others just made for weekend lounging. Maybe I’ll have to make a lounge collection some time.

And then Holy Moly! Playdead killed it! They’re way more than shirt silkscreeners now. Their portion ended with specially-printed Playdead fabric! It must have taken forever to do. Now I totally want a dress with monsters all over it! And speaking of monsters, Playdead had these 4 giant monsters dancing all over the runway to “Beat It”! Only the best moment in Canadian fashion history! I love monsters!

I expected the same kind of fun at Biddell’s show since he’s such a fun, cool guy. He kind of surprised me with a subdued collection (well, if you don’t count the insane comic-book-print spandex!), but his details, sewing, and overall design were amazing. Now I know why he won Project Runway Canada and I’m a little bit jealous. I hope my collection looks that good on the runway.

Sandee didn’t have an afterparty, so we went to Biddell’s party at the sort-of vacant Burroughs Building. It was the coolest party: free drinks, gift bags with K-Swiss or Royal Elastic shoes, and Fritz Helder and the Phantoms! They’re the best. And so nice! I cornered Diego to tell him how much I love them and we talked a while about the band’s fashion week plans. He said:

“We showed up for L’Oreal Fashion Week because we’re a really big fashion band and of course we’re here to support Biddell because he’s doing really cool things and he’s kind of like a bad-boy, and we’re kind of like the bad-boys of music and fashion as well. As for the rest of the week, we’re going to check out Morales tomorrow and Denis Gagnon is always a really big favourite. I used to live in Montreal, so he’s always been a really big favourite of mine. and even though he shows in New York, Jeremy Laing is probably our favourite Toronto designer.”

I also learned that they’ll be playing Fashion sCares! How cool is that? I asked him about the costumes, which I know will be completely amazing, but Diego was sworn to secrecy. He did tell me that they’re working with Tommy Ton and Pink Cobra. Can’t wait for it!
