Mais oui. It is most definitely the season for holiday parties and as my present to you, Dear Readers, I am providing you with the necessary tips with which to survive the season.
Last week, we looked at how to maintain sophistication at the office party, while this week we examine the most important item on your shopping list: the hostess gift.
It is always imperative to give a hostess a thank-you gift for inviting you to her event, but what to bring. A bottle of wine, a gift certificate, or a box of chocolates says that you did not take her invitation seriously. These days, party guests must be creative or they will not receive repeat invitations. Whatever should you do? Here are my suggestions.
Lucinda’s List: Hostess Gifts With Sophistication
- Homemade Trade – With recessionista fashion all the rage, it is time to share your culinary and crafty skills. If you make cookies or a set of custom napkin rings, ensure ingredients and materials are only the best.
- …and Homemade Remade – If you are simply a nightmare in the kitchen, visit a baker in a neighbourhood located far away from your party host. Buy the most charming baked goods, get home, and place them in a fancy container of your choice. Everyone will assume you are the top chef.
- Look Books – Everyone appreciates a beautiful coffee table book and there is always one suitable for anyone in an art book boutique.
- Canadiana – This winter, nothing is more fashionable than giving a little Canadiana for the holidays. From Hudson’s Bay blankets to gourmet maple syrup, you cannot go wrong by showing some patriotism.
- Designer Home Luxury – Even if you are not experiencing the recession, your hostess may be. If you are facing a party held by a recently unemployed friend, give her a little taste of luxury that she may miss in the next year. Something such as designer toilet paper should be suitable.
- Bubble Bath – Your single-gal bomshell girlfriend will love you for bringing the best bubble bath you can find. She will undoubtedly unwind in the tub after the guests have gone. You may want to throw in some champagne with that gift. Only the best for your swinging girlfriend.
- Present a Scent – Nothing says “I am a thoughtful guest” more than a custom smell. Work with an aromatherapist to concoct a new perfume or room scent for your hostess.
- Hire the Help – It is always a kind gesture to show up at a party with your houseboy or maid. Your hostess will appreciate the extra assistance.
- Date with Chocolate – If you feel most comfortable giving chocolate, ensure that it is a top-quality import not available in your city.
- Wine, if You Must – Yes, you can indeed bring wine, but the sophisticated solution is to call the hostess prior to the party to discuss what will be served. You want to ensure the bottle you bring will complement the plates.

As I was scrolling down the page to read your entries in chronological order, I read “Homemade Trade” as “Homemade Tiara.” I gasped and said to myself “I wish someone would make me a homemade tiara!”
Imagine my disappointment when I scrolled back up and read the post correctly.
