There is a old technique from rural China that involved the binding of the feet of female youngsters to prevent them from developing. It was a brutal process and was debilitating and deforming to the feet. It was done as a small foot was considered an appealing feature in the female and a greater price can be commanded by the family for the bride when the feet had been bound. There was a considerable market in these rural communities for the decorative and carefully designed footwear that these people would be required to wear because of the smaller and deformed feet. Around 100 or so years ago public pressures began to mount to outlaw the foot binding and this mostly was successful and it is not done anymore. The technique needed to end as it was so debilitating and painful for the girls. After they became a grownup, the damage had been done and there was very little that could be done to manage the pain and disability. Having said that, you can still find some elderly woman alive that had their feet bound when they were young kids.
You will find supposedly parallels to this practice of Chinese Foot Binding that may be observed today. Some experts like to link the practice these days of women whom force their feet inside the high heel footwear as being exactly like the practice. In rural China the practice was all about the female performing something that is very pleasing to the male, whatever the outcomes in terms of pain and disability. The practice today of using tight fitting high heel footwear by females has consequences in the terms of foot disability and foot pain. It is also presumably done in the context of the female doing something that is agreeable to the eye of the male. There is some disagreement if the link between the two practices really do justify the type of exploration that they have been subjected to.
